How To Carry Your PC With You!
If you are like me, then you hate using someone else’s computer because it is missing the things that you constantly use. For example, you like your own Firefox because you have custom bookmarks and everything. So here is a simple How To on using YOUR PC away from your PC.
- First you will need a flash drive with at least 1GB of storage capacity. I personally would recommend that you get a 2GB or above.
- Now go to the Portable Apps website and download the Portable Apps package. Whether you choose the really big one or the small base one is up to you.
- After you download the application, plug in your Flash Drive and extract the files to the Flash Drive.
- You now have a flash drive that is filled with all sorts of useful software, but only if you exploit the hidden talent of it.
- I’m going to assume that you are using Firefox. Your flash drive will automatically have a drive letter associated with it. Please take note of this drive letter.
- Now paste the following into the address bar: E:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortableTest\App\DefaultData\Profile
- This should take you to the Profile folder, now doubleclick My Computer (on your computer, not flash drive) and paste the following into the address bar. Please note you will have to change the username according to what username you use: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
- Right click and select Copy on the appropriate folder. DO NOT CLICK CUT!
- Now click into the flash drive window and right click and select Paste.
- The profile will now paste into the flash drive so all of your bookmarks and such are on the flash drive. Congratulations you just configured your flash drive to be exactly like your version of Firefox on your computer.
Now if all you could configure was Mozilla Firefox, that would not be very fun. You can do a lot more stuff too. You can save files and such directly on the flash drive instead of saving on the computer. Also when you browse the Internet, instead of the files going on to the host computer they go on the flash drive instead.
If for some reason you want a certain application that is not available, then check the Master List. If you still don’t see the software that you want, and you desperately need it, then either Search for the program you are wanting or make a new request for it Here.
Anyone that has any other suggestions on how to make your computer more portable, then please post in the comments so we all can benefit. Enjoy this short how to!
Bad PR Move by Creative Labs.
For the people hiding under a rock, Creative Labs has recently stopped famous driver modder, Daniel K from reverse engineering the drivers to make them work in Windows Vista.
The link to the original topic, with the “cease and decist” letter there is located: Here.
While I agree with Creative Labs that reverse engineering drivers is bad and that he accepted donations for his work, which in turn he made a profit is bad. I think Creative should have taken more time on their drivers and got them to work properly before stating that the soundcards would work with Windows Vista.
The best move Creative could have done is actually hire this Daniel K guy to produce the drivers, because evidently they are lacking in this area.
I love Creative sound cards and other peripherals, but at this time I cannot recommend that anyone buy any Creative Labs parts.
A petition to get Creative to improve their drivers is located: Here.
Good luck getting those sound cards to work, hopefully Creative backs off so the cards continue to work in Windows Vista.
